  • Short Summary

Walking race from Sunderland to Darlington - won by T W Green of Belgrave Harriers.

  • Description

Full title reads: "Sunderland to Darlington. The North Country's Walking 'Classic'. T. W. Green (Belgrave Harriers) - Champion of England - wins for 3rd successive year."

    Sunderland to Darlington.

Large group of men start walking race. Crowds line either side of the road to watch the start.

Out of the town, the field has thinned and the walkers are now racing down a slight hill. A few people watch from the roadside.

Closer shots as the walkers make their progress - they are now back in an area of housing.

Two walkers (probably out in the lead) are followed by men on bicycles.

A group of walkers come past shops in a town. The streets are lined with people watching.

One of the walkers comes onto a playing field where people are waiting to watch the final stage of the race. Back view of the same walker. That same walker being congratulated - presumably he is Mr T W Green.

The walker is indeed Tommy Green, who was the first winner of the Olympic 50 kilometre walk in Los Angeles in 1932.
