    The Hero Airman - Victoria Cross flying ace Lieutenant WL Robinson receives presentation gift from children cottage homes at Romford, Essex - 1916.

    Opens with shot looking down a long line of little girls; all in white pinafores; black stockings; all waving handkerchiefs in excitement; a woman teacher type walks up the row; and a little dog runs in the same direction. Pan along people standing outside ivy-covered building; mostly adults; with one little girl in hat and gloves and serious look.

    CU Hero airman Robinson talking to a few other men. Quick shot of girls of all ages; from the Homes - then pan across group of the boys all cheering and waving their hats. Shot of boys' band playing; pan to their leader; a man playing trumpet while waving a baton in the other hand. Row of adults: old man at table; Robinson next to him; and other ladies and men.     "Lieutenant WL Robinson is (William) Leefe Robinson VC.

    Robinson won his Victoria Cross after becoming the first British pilot to shot down a German airship. Details of the action for which he was awarded the medal can be found here...

    In 1917 he was captured by the Germans - although he survived the war, he sadly died on 31 December 1918 of Spanish Flu.
