  • Short Summary

Scenes from the announcement of the Irish Hospitals Sweepstake.

  • Description

Full title reads: "Dublin. The Golden Drum of Chance! Here's how your ticket, if you were one of the lucky ones, was drawn."

Dublin, Eire, Southern Ireland, Republic of Ireland.

Shot of girls dressed as horse race jockeys stand on a stage under a banner which reads: "Tattenham Corner". Behind the jockeys are a row of nurses. They are there to assist in the drawing of the tickets in the Irish national lottery or sweepstake. A man in the middle of the stage is reading from a piece of paper.

Pan, showing the painting of race horses on the canopy above the stage.

C/U pan along the painting of the horse race showing the details.

Nurses sit along side the large drum from which the sweepstake winners will be picked. As the drum stops they reach in to select numbers. A man in uniform gathers in the numbers from the nurses.

A nurse selects a number from a small see through revolving drum. The winner is handed over to a man.

(Thanks to Paraic O Lochlain for informing us that this is most likely a draw of the Irish Hospitals Sweepstakes - some kind of Lottery Draw.)

IThis does not look like the Dublin Sweepstake but the Fourth Golden Ballot run by Mrs C F Leyel (Hilda Leyel) in 1923. Tattenham Corner (shown on the film) is at Epsom, Surrey and not in Dublin. The description of the ladies dressed as jockeys fits the description of the drawing of the last Golden Ballot run by Mrs Leyel.
