Fabulous 'South Pacific' fashion show featuring clothes and accessories by Teddy Tinling.
Teddy Tinling's South Pacific fashion show in London.
M/S as models, Susie Turner and Pierre walk into shot; she wears a coolie style straw hat, a beach wrap in orange with a sequinned pineapple motif on each lower corner, with red swimsuit underneath and carries a circular bag that looks like a cushion with large white tassels. Her ensemble is called 'Waikiki'. Pierre wears a white beach shirt with a green and orange fruit print and orange denim 'slacks'; he takes off his sunglasses to look at the (real) pineapple Susie hands him. C/U of their colourful clothes; Pierre holds the pineapple next to Susie's jacket motif; they walk towards camera which blacks out as Pierre's jacket touches it.
The next model, Shirley Worthington, walks into shot wearing a dazzling pink and orange striped tunic, pirate pants (pedal pushers) in 'bougainvillaea' (pink to you and me) to match, a straw boater with draped fabric round the crown and parasol to match. This outfit is called 'Tropical Jester' and also includes a pair of fantabulosa triple-pointed cat's-eye sunglasses. Shirley twirls her parasol, takes off her sunglasses and gives us a twirl before walking off.
Karmiella, the next model, enters wearing a red, white and blue vertical striped lace shirt, with matching pirate pants and bustier in diagonal stripes. She puts on her amazing sunglasses - they have flame-shaped points coming out from the sides - very exotic! This ensemble is 'Tobacco Flower'.
M/S of man (with Jimmy Edwards moustache) and woman in the audience. Marianne and Pierre enter; she wears a cream play suit (called 'Surfer's Paradise') with hooded cape or stole, trimmed with green and coral fabric and sequins. The skirt of her towelling play suit is decorated with sequins in a fish and underwater scene. Pierre wears a beach shirt with an abstract fish design and brown slacks - nice!
M/S (at entrance to fashion show?) as we see a BOAC air hostess putting a garland of orchids around a middle-aged woman buyer's neck; commentator tells us the leis were specially flown in from the South Pacific. Against a backdrop of tropical plants and fruit in net hammocks, Bella is seen wearing a swimsuit with heart-shaped bodice and stole in white towelling decorated with red hearts (called 'Leap Year') - gorgeous. (I have seen British film star Belinda Lee wearing this outfit in a publicity shot.)
C/U of two women in the audience; one wears an orchid lei over her fur coat. Karmiella is next seen in 'Midnight Stranger', a midnight blue (waterproof) velvet swimsuit and stole with ermine tail trim at the hips and stole ends. She puts on cat's-eye sunglasses (with 'cat eyebrows' attached!), wraps the stole around her head and walks off. M/S of audience. Male model, Guy, and Jean Clark are seen from the audience wearing his and hers 'Harlequin' set; both wear brown and white button-through striped tops and brown shorts for Jean, slacks for Guy, with large straw hats (Guy's hat is a bit 'Speedy Gonzalez'). They join hands and walk down the catwalk; C/U of elegant woman, Jeanne Heale, in the audience applauding.
Shirley Worthington is next up in 'Fijian Beach Pyjamas' in a turquoise print; strapless bodice and close-fitting trousers with a kick-flare at the bottom and matching large sun-hat. M/S of the audience looking expectantly to the right. Striking C/U of Karmiella wearing a huge brown straw hat - coolie-style with a small sequinned palm tree at the tip. Her head is tilted forward, and she lifts her face and looks sensually at a large exotic flower, bringing it towards her mouth as if she is about to eat it! Tilt down to show her short beach shift dress with a palm tree motif at the shoulder and brown footprints across the front and around the hem; this one is called 'Man Friday'. Tilt up again to show her face, smiling, as she holds the flower.
