• Short Summary

Representatives from the Football Association seek a new deal for professional footballers.

  • Description

Ministry of Labour, St. James Square, London.

MS. Mr. Howerth speaking (Nat. snd.) "The continued popularity of association football as an entertainment is due to a combination of factors. Among them I would particularise first, the league system of promotion and relegation which keeps all clubs on their toes: second, this opportunity which all clubs share alike of finding and developing young players CU. "Thirdly the retain system which gives a Club the right, to the services of its players and prevents poaching by other clubs: fourth the transfer system which permits the movement of a player from one club to another, and lastly the constant loyal partisanship of spectators to their favourite club and the enthusiasm for the game exhibited by all players"

MS. Name board: Ministry of Labour and National Service, pan down to doorway, commissionaire opens door, four players, Frank Walton, (Southern) Danny Winter (Chelsea) Arthur Banner (Leyton) & J. Guthrie. Camera pans.

MCU. Jimmie Guthrie (Secretary of Players Union) Speaking (Nat. snd.) "We have come to the Ministry of Labour to seek a new deal for the professional footballer. All we want is the same treatment given to every other Briton: Freedom to move to another job when our contract ends, Freedom to earn what we are worth. CU. Jock Dodds (Agent for Bogota Club) (Nat. snd) "Of Course, as we all known, some of the Players have come back and for different reasons, but some have stayed. However my feelings in the matter are that it is unsatisfactory both from the point of view of the players coming back and the players who are staying there and I have now served my connections with all interests in the game. What do you think about it Frances?" MS. Camera pans to CU. Dodd's wife.

MS Mrs. Dodds "Well, I am very pleased that my husband has finished with football and can now settle down to being a good husband and a good citizen and (CU) devoting all his attention to business". (3 takes)
