• Short Summary

A new dredger with agitator jets is seen in action on the Norfolk Broads.

  • Description

Various shots of an old fashioned dredger at work on the Norfolk Broads.

M/S from a moving boat of the new 'Jetlift' dredger; it looks very snazzy in bright yellow. We are told that it "draws up the silt on the vacuum cleaner principle, and through a floating pipeline, deposits it on the bank". Two men on the Jetlift look at a plan and discuss.

M/S of pipes of the dredger being raised up as one of the men signals for the lifting to stop. Commentator continues: "Through the two outside tubes powerful jets of water act as cutters on the river bed. Then agitator jets loosen the silt which is then sucked up the central tube". C/U of the other man in the control box, smoking a pipe. At the signal he lowers the pipes again. High angle M/S as the pipes are submerged in the water.

M/S of pipes on marshy, swampy land with water spurting out of them. Various shots of the agitator jets being raised; these are attached to the bottom of the pipes we saw being raised and lowered earlier. Very powerful and strong jets of water are shooting out of them.

L/S from the top of the dredger of the pipes leading from the machine to the marsh land; panning slowly to show the land in the distance. M/Ss of the man in the control box; the pipes on the land squirting water. L/S of the Jetlift with a small boat moored next to it.

Note: On file is a glossy b/w photo of the 'Acrow Jet Dredger' - presumably it's the same model - plus correspondence from Acrow (Engineers) Limited and information about the new dredger.
