  • Short Summary

Funny item showing adventures of 'Big Bill' during Glasgow rag festivities.

  • Description

Titles read: 'Students' Day - Glasgow Students hold "Add-a-Penny" day in aid of Charity.'

    Glasgow, Scotland - 1928.

This film loosely follows the antics of Big Bull; portrayed by a university student in top hat & tails; w/ round wire-rim spectacles; who runs around the city like some insane Dickensian character.

Opens w/ CU Big Bull's leering face framed in a life ring that says SS Donnybrook; held up by 2 men; he's smoking a cigar and talking fast. Big Bull watching a liner ship pass at docks. Big Bull in the midst of cattle & workers who are moving the animals along. BB lifted on shoulders of other students; holding a suitcase w/ 'BT USA' written on it.

Wacky parade through streets in pouring rain. Students wearing all sorts of bizarre costumes: clown or jester suits; long beards; cowboys; even a skeleton riding on a horse & holding salute. A wild ring dance in the street. More mayhem.

One student even portrays a news cameraman; wearing a safari helmet & turning hand-cranked camera. Group of boys trying to revive a fallen fake camel (2 boys in costume). BB & respectable looking city officials boarding ferry. More of the crazy parade.

Title (which is funny enough in itself): 'Although hotly pursued Big Bill succeeds in burning the Encyclopaedia Britannica.' Shot of BB w/ the book; running at top speed across courtyard; w/ crowd chasing after him; old stone building (college?) in BG. Shot of crowd surrounding lamppost; w/ BB clinging to the pole at the top. Finally; BB seeing the city from the water wagon.

    Youth; comedy
