• Short Summary

Leading men V comedians in a charity baseball match in Hollywood.

  • Description

Hollywood, California, United States of America.

Various shots at a sports ground / stadium where we see a team of Hollywood leading men playing baseball against a team of comedians. C/U of crooner film star Dick Powell, head of the leading men, about to take his turn at bat. C/U of comic star Joe E Brown, acting as commentator for the match. Mary Pickford throws the first ball of the game; Buster Keaton stands beside her, wearing a catcher's mitt. Brief shot of spectators in the stand.

Walter Abel pitches, comedian Nat Pendleton bats and runs to first base; he has '00' on the back of his shirt. Comic trio The Ritz Brothers do some funny business; two of them are wearing old fashioned striped swimsuits. Comedian Vince Barnett pitches, actor John Boles hits the ball and starts running. Commentator tells us Jackie Coogan is the next to bat - I think it is actually Jackie Cooper, another former child star.

Jimmy Ritz of the Ritz Brothers takes a swipe at the ball. C/U of Billy Gilbert as he watches the ball excitedly and tries to catch it. He misses and we see a cloud of smoke on the pitch, as if the ball has exploded.

Cataloguer's trivia note: character comedian Billy Gilbert made several films with big comedians (Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, 3 Stooges) and was the voice of 'Sneezy' in Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'.
