• Short Summary

Radar station at Calshot, Southampton alerts a dredger to clear the way for the SS America.

  • Description

M/S of the entrance of a radar station housed in a castle in Calshot, Southampton as a sailor walks through the stone archway. C/Us of a slit window and a round ornament on the castle wall. M/S of the castle (the commentator says it was built in Henry VIII's time), tilt up to show a modern building on top of it and the radar scanner whirling round above it. L/S of radar station on the edge of the harbour, with a Princess flying boat (or seaplane) behind it. L/S of the Southampton estuary, with the SS America steaming through towards us.

M/S in radar room where the Duty Operations Officer is looking at a screen. C/Us of him looking at the screen, his hands turning knobs on the control panel, the radar screen with the beam moving round. M/S of "ultramodern VHF radiotelephone" with two telephone receivers; a man comes into shot and picks up one of them. Natural sound as we hear him giving instructions to alert a dredger to move clear of the path of SS America.

M/Ss of radar launch travelling towards camera, then the Captain at the helm, who turns and beckons for a replacement as he moves to look at his radar screen. M/Ss of the launch's radar scanner, the Captain looking at the radar screen, then picking up the phone as we hear his reply. He replaces the phone, takes over the helm and turns to starboard. C/U of his replacement watching. M/Ss of the launch turning right, the flags at the top of the mast, tilt down to show the cabin and the scanner whirling round.

M/S of boats seen from the launch, including the dredger; L/S of SS America coming up the estuary, then M/S from the launch as we approach the dredger. C/U of Harbour Master's flag. M/S from launch as a man appears with a megaphone to alert the dredger, then panning shot to show two men there waving acknowledgement.

M/S inside radar station; a man working at a desk in front of a window lookout point where we can see SS America passing. He looks at it through binoculars. M/S of a tug. M/S from inside station of SS America steaming along, panning right to show another man at a desk who also looks at it through binoculars, then M/S of the radar scanner and tilt down and right to show the SS America passing. M/S back with the second man in the station still looking through binoculars, who gets up and walks into the radar room to look over the shoulder of a man seated at the radar screen. C/U of radar screen and inter-scan line. M/S as the man picks up the telephone. L/S of SS America as it steams away.

Note: the scenes in the radar room are very dark.
