Convalescent Canadian soldiers doing Swedish exercise routines

  • Description

Soldier in training. Location of events unknown.

World War One . Sports. Convalescent Canadian soldiers doing Swedish exercise routines . They are arranged in rows; some people sit on bleachers in background; watching. The men are wearing pants and sweaters; not Army uniforms. They do all sorts of callisthenics -- squats; stretches; etc. and synchronised arm movements even tumbling-- cartwheels. A bunch of grown men suddenly flipping over sideways. Toward the end; shot of soldiers in uniform marching down street is cut into the exercise footage. Physical fitness; sports; health.

My Grandfather is in the front row of this clip in a white sweater. From my understanding he was shown (in this or another clip) in what was referred to as a recruiting film at theaters in Canada during the War. I have letters from people he knew in Canada to him telling him they had seen him. I wonder if that film still exists. He was also awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal by Prince Edward after the war. I'd love to know if there is any film of that event.
