• Short Summary

Boys' soapbox car Derby in South Africa with separate race for black competitors.

  • Description

    Title reads: "South Africa".

Soapbox Derby at Krugersdorf (aka Krugersdorp), South Africa.

Various shots of boys' soapbox race. Various shots of teenage boys (all white South Africans) in soapbox cars (go-carts) racing down slope. Crowds cheer from side of road. One boy has written word 'Blue Bird' on his car, in honour of Sir Malcolm Campbell. C/U of winning boy sitting in his car.

Various shots of another Soapbox Derby - appears to be segregated race for black South African boys. Their cars are not as snazzy as their white counterparts, showing they had less money and resources available to them whilst building the carts. Narrator makes comment: "it's a black outlook for some fellers ... but at least they can make a show".

Cataloguers' note: good item for showing how apartheid affected every aspect of life in South Africa.
