  • Short Summary

Footage of aeroplanes and naval ships combining to sink submarine.

  • Description

Smoke screen for ships and bombing raid.

Aeroplane and ship work together to blow up an enemy U-boat. Smoke screen for ships- - and bombing raid. Aeroplane flies past; letting out lots of smoke - cool shot. The smoke spreads downward in sort of stripes. Another plane flies past. Pan down a bit; a warship is below on the sea. Aerial shot: a sort of squarish white cloud below; going down to the water. Also dark smoke is coming from it. - Apparently the ship; covered by white smoke. Camouflage. Side view of ship (not hidden ship); something in front of ship in the water blows up. Another explosion.

CU big cloud of smoke coming from a bombed submarine. CU submarine sticking out of water. Same - just end of the U-boat sticking up at angle; w/ the warship in distance; across the water. CU part of sub again - bottom? - as it floats on side. (Also on ON 414 B) shot of the craft blowing up; in which one actually sees the towers collapse etc. ... &2) Same as last shot mentioned above; the end of a bombed sub (?) sticking out of the water-- except this continues to show the tip falling forward and sinking; disappearing into the sea- which is much more dramatic).

Boats and ships, aviation. World war one. Action.

My assessment of the bombing sequence: The bombs are aimed at an obsolete batleship (dated by basket masts and three tall funnels). The first bombs appear to detonate on hitting the water followed by successful hits on the ship. The clips following this are out of sequence - the bows sticking vertically out of the water should be the final clip; the ship lying on its side should come first (unless the clips are of two different events). There is no submarine.
