  • Short Summary

Inspection of Special Police and St. John's Nurses on Streatham Common.

  • Description

World War One: the war at home.

    Streatham Common, London.

Civilian volunteers: Special Police and nurses parade for Sir Edward Ward. Sir Edward Ward and a few others, all carrying canes, mount steps of dais. Ward salutes as large group of Specials march forward, they wear dark uniforms, caps, armbands. Pan closer to marchers and back to Ward.

St. John's Nurses parade. Ward and other dignitaries watch as nurses in long black capes and caps walk passed in rows. Side view of parade passing small platform where Ward and dignitaries are, crowds of spectators line the route.

Rows of (military?) nurses carrying stretchers. These women wear different uniforms with white shirts and ties, wide-brimmed hats, hip-length jackets - more like the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps or similar military groups.

    Modified WPA record.
