Sir Douglas Haig - reception and inspection.

    Location of events unknown.

Crowds in a town street wave and cheer as car carrying Sir Douglas Haig drives by. High angle view shows lots of university students (male and female) in gowns and some in mortar boards walking through ancient stone gateway or archway - Haig could be visiting a university town, but not sure which one.

Haig's car arrives outside building in flag-decked street. Haig and officials walk past crowds. Group of dignitaries and Mayor pose in group with Haig and two women. Mayor chats to Haig with crowds gathered round, then they are both driven off in the back of an open car.

Interior, high angle shot of Haig and others speaking from platform in a hall with a huge wreath on the wall behind them. A group of dignitaries stand before the main platform, all holding something - could be maces or microphones that they put in place. Pan across audience of university students (male and female). One poor man is manhandled above the shoulders of the others and passed around - some kind of university ritual?

Several shots of Haig inspecting troops and volunteers (?) lined up in street. He shakes hands with a couple of them. Parade of children carrying Union Jack flags walk down street. Scottish piping band lead the children in next shot. Haig and others arrange themselves for the posed group shot we saw earlier. Students in gowns. High angle view of crowds in street. The group posed shot again.

Note: several shots are intercut showing a submarine or U-boat in dock - seems to be from a different, unrelated story.

This film (featuring Earl Haig) appears to have been recorded in the University Town of St Andrew's, Fife, Scotland. The ancient stone archway shown in the early part of the film is at the junction of South Street/Bridge Street/City Road and still stands there today.
