• Short Summary

Sydney Howard, Richard Hearne and company entertain troops in the show 'Shephard's Pie'.

  • Description

Titles read: 'Now Pathetone Takes You Over To The Princes Theatre London, For A Topical Glance At "SHEPHARD'S [sic] PIE".'

    London.

Several shots of lines of troops - newly recruited guards - arriving at the Princes Theatre for a performance of the revue 'Shephard's Pie'. Stage stars Phyllis Robbins, Sydney Howard, Arthur Riscoe and an impossibly young-looking Richard Hearne (aka Mr Pastry) greeting guards as they enter the theatre. Riscoe and Hearne try to sneak in with the guards but are pulled out of the line by a policeman.

Various shots of Sydney Howard in a sketch from the show called 'A Bedtime Story' - he tells a joke about a man giving his dog half a crown to fetch a newspaper and finding the dog had picked up a French poodle instead.

We then see Benita Lydal, Sydney Howard, Arthur Riscoe and Richard Hearne doing another comedy routine from the show called 'Chamber Music'. Good comedy number showing a chamber orchestra in difficulties. Richard Hearne is especially good as a musician having great trouble with the Boozeaphone (large brass wind instrument) as he gets stuck in the tubing and involves Arthur Riscoe in his struggle to reach the mouthpiece. There are brief cutaway shots of audience composed mainly of servicemen.

Just a note- it's Phyllis Robins not Robbins.
