Material relating to newsreel story GRAND NATIONAL 1959 - 59/24.
Selected Originals (offcuts, selected scenes, out-takes, rushes) for story GRAND NATIONAL 1959 - 59/24.
Extra footage to newsreel story, plus duplicate of newsreel story.
Aintree, Liverpool in Merseyside.
Footage begins with cameraman holding card in front of lens reading 'Pathe / C Baynes / Tracking Shot / Jumps 1 - 5 / 17 - 21'.
View of the empty racecourse; sound of van whirring away. As the horses approach, we hear the cameraman telling Arthur (the driver of the van on which the camera is mounted) to start rolling slowly, then to speed up as he takes the tracking shot of the horses in action. Poor Arthur is constantly being told to go faster, then slow down, then speed up etc. Sound of van honking horn. Good glimpse of 'behind the scenes' / making of a newsreel item! After speeding up to keep up with the horses, the van suddenly slows to a halt and we hear the cameraman say "Oh fuck".
We start up again as the horses approach. "Faster Arthur, faster!" (I feel quite sorry for Arthur). After a while Arthur says he has to slow down - "Horses comin' up". Cameraman says "Oh Christ". We slow slightly, then Arthur calls "On course!" and we speed up again. The horse who leads for most of the race, Surprise Packet, falls at Becher's and cameraman says "Oh Christ, he's fallen". (NB: there is not a shot of this horse falling in cut story.)
01:25:58 We then see several silent shots taken by the remote control camera at Becher's Brook as horses come over the jump (seem to be landing just in front of us). Thrown jockeys stagger off the course when the horses have passed.
01:26:41 Brief shot of a man in a cap, coat and glasses attending to something in a car - could be Arthur?! More tracking shots of the race, this time without the dialogue between cameraman Baynes and Arthur.
01:28:13 Man holds card before camera reading "Pathe / A Tunwell / Jumps 3 19". L/S of the horses galloping towards and over a jump. A small car, looks like Morris Minor traveller, with cameraman on top is seen zooming alongside the course - could be Baynes and Arthur!
01:28:54 Man holds card before camera reading "Pathe / P Whitaker / Jumps 8 - 24". L/Ss of horses approaching the camera and taking jumps. Several horses refuse to jump or throw their jockeys. L/S of horses out of the race being led off by jockeys. Policemen are gathered round.
01:31:40 C/U of card reading "Pathe / W Jordan / Jumps 6 - 9 / 22 - 25". L/Ss of horses in action in the race. Looks like Baynes and Arthur filming from Morris Minor in foreground at start. We follow the horses around the course.
01:33:44 Followed by what seems to be duplicate of newsreel story, without titles, sound or commentary, but perhaps one or two extra shots. Sound cuts in on tracking shot and we hear Baynes and Arthur again - not sure if this is cuts or part of newsreel with original sound left on. Sound is intermittent.
