Footage of street scenes in Petrograd.
Scenes from Petrograd. Russia.
Small cargo ships moving on almost frozen river. Unloading ship: crane lifts cargo (looks like sacks of grain) out of hold; then men carry away the heavy bags on their backs. (Probably food sent for famine relief.) Horses pull sleds loaded w/ sacks down snowy city street. More sleds carrying barrels approaching cam. Shot of street w/ pedestrians crossing in every direction; another sledge passes. MS man w/ round wire rim glass & fur hat operates hand-cranked movie camera while others watch.
MLS people (mostly children) sit around fire outside; horses stand nearby- -refugees of some sort?. Many pedestrians hurrying down sidewalk w/ small shops; snow piled alongside. More people walking on wide street; also another sledge. LS women shovel snow. MLS woman & man shovel. Next; a group of young girls (maybe school group?) all climb onto a sleigh really a sled w/ double-sided bench down the middle. Is this public transportation or a sort of school bus? 2 sleds loaded w/ schoolchildren (2nd has boys) drive down street; while more kids walk along. At end a shot which is obviously from another location; probably southern USSR: wide shot many camels and wagons parked in big open area.
