  • Short Summary

Romans chariot racing and men testing safety helmets at Road Research Laboratory.

  • Description

Titles read: 'SAFETY HELMETS, OLD AND NEW'.

    Location of events unknown.

Several shots of men and women in Roman dress (toga dresses for the women, helmets and gladiator-style robes for the men) leading horses in ornate, studded reins and harnesses out of tents or marquees. They harness the horses to wicker chariots.

Several women ride horses (bareback) out of the tent. Two chariots are drawn by horses into a circus tent then we see various shots of the two teams tearing around the ring in a race.

Fade into shot of two men in boiler suits and helmets riding mopeds or scooters along a suburban road and turning into a road with a sign at the end reading 'Road Research Laboratory - Traffic and Safety Division'. Inside a building we see several shots of men testing a hat and a helmet by placing them on glass globes mounted on the end of a pole attached to a simple measuring device and smashing them against a block of concrete.

End titles read: 'WEAR ONE OF THE LATEST HELMETS APPROVED BY BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION SPECIFICATION. THE END - PATHE PICTORIAL'.

Note: this seems to be a special issue of Pathe Pictorial in the guise of a public information film. Catalogued as documentary.
