    Newcastle-on-Tyne, Tyne and Wear.

Students prepare their floats for a rag parade through the streets of Newcastle. Students featured are from Kings College, Durham University. Several students work on a float which is decorated to look like a train. Other floats are seen.

C/U of the rag collecting tins. They are labelled "Rag 1956" and money collected will go to Dr Barnado's homes. L/S of floats including one called "Crock's Island" where students are bandaged up and have crutches. Another float has a woman dressed as a mermaid. Moving shot of the crowd lined streets. High angle shot of marching band, lots of students playing various instruments. A student dressed as a clown directs traffic.

C/U of this year's beauty queen Irene Thompson. Shot of students shaking collecting tins. Various shots of the students, those watching and the floats. Narrator remarks on the fact that this Rag resulted in a record total of £14,000 which will go to several deserving charities: "a stirling tribute in itself to the much maligned symbol of modern youth... the student!"

Note: it may just be that it was a grey day but the clothing of the people watching the parade looks very drab - all grey and brown with a tiny bit of red thrown in. Not what we have come to expect of the mid 50s from all the fashion items from this period. May just be the colour quality of the film though I guess.

"Rag Pie 1956" the rag magazine is held on file.
