• Short Summary

The making of Dunlop's TV commercials live from Monza.

  • Description

The start of a motor race, cut to Presenter sitting in front of a make up mirror, he tells us that we are about to see the making of Dunlop's 1960 Grand Prix TV commercials that will be transmitted on the same day as the race by A.B.C. TV, using the winning driver in interview.
A previous commercial is run, opening caption reads "Monaco Grand Prix won on DUNLOP".
The presenter switches on a tape recorder and over stills of Stirling Moss we hear his voice telling us how good Dunlop tyres are. The presenter tells us how impressive that was with eleven camera cuts in 30 secs. A production meeting is held to discuss future problems.
Despite their past worries all went well, and a series of stills list the races that advertised their tyres. Now comes Monza and the 9th commercial.
On the track and in the pits the cars are being prepared for the race. The radio link is tested. The scripts are revised. The stills photographer is ready. They all give the thumbs up and the race starts. Cars whiz past and on lap 20 Hill is in the pits, his tyres are checked but they are OK and he continues. Meanwhile at the ABC TV studios at Teddington, the scripts are checked, as is the set, the lights, the radio link. Back at the race with only a few laps to go Phil Hill is in the lead driving a Ferrari. More chat on the radio link between Monza and Teddington, and more discussion about the script. Back at the race and Hill wins. He is surrounded by photographers.
