Pilots dropped on snowy Alpine mountain top must find their way to a base - RAF survival exercise.

  • Description

    Bad Kihlgrub, Bavaria, Germany.

L/S of a mountain top covered in snow. A man with parachute stumbles down the slope. M/S of the man tumbling down. He gets up and starts taking off the parachute. Another man comes from behind and helps him. L/S of the people trimming pine trees. Several shots of the men making a tent by using trimmed pine trees and parachute. It looks like an Indian hut. Men put some pine branches inside so they do not have to sit on the snow.

This is one of survival exercises of the Royal Air Force school situated in Bad Kihlgrub, Germany. The school, run by the Second Tactical Air Force, was established to train aircrew in methods of survival in near Arctic conditions. Men are left with whatever they would have if crashed in those conditions. All food they have is the emergency rations attached to the parachute which is enough for around 14 days. M/S of a man opening a silver square box - emergency ration. C/U shot of the man's hand taking something from the box (looks like a small packet of biscuits) and smelling it.

C/U shot of hands filling the silver ration with snow. C/U shot of the man's face as he works. M/S of the three men around the fire. One man takes the ration filled with snow and puts it over fire. High angle shot of the ration as the snow melts. One of the main elements of this exercise is for men to find their way back to base. Several shots of the men and maps. They are discussing possible routes. Route on this occasion takes them up and down the mountain slopes. L/S of the men starting their long walk. M/S of the men walking - great pine trees everywhere. C/U shot of the foot in the snow. M/S of the men walking down the hill.
