  1. Gerard Gallagher says

This occasion was the Canonisation of the 40 Martyrs of England & Wales in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome on 25 October 1970. Pope Paul VI is seen preaching his homily, then Cardinal Bafile, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, accompanied by Fr. Paolo Molinari, SJ, postulator of the Cause for Canonisation, formally requests the Pope to Canonise the 40 Martyrs. All then kneel for Litany of Saints. Scene switches to the Pope’s entrance into the Basilica and the start of the Mass then switches again to the Pope’s departure, carried on the Sedia Gestatoria. Following scenes of the Audience granted to the pilgrims from England & Wales in the S. Damaso Courtyard in the Vatican. The Pope is accompanied by Mgr. Macchi, his Secretary, Cardinal Heenan, Archbishop of Westminster, Archbishop Martin, Prefect of the Papal Household and Mgr. Rigali of the English (language) section of the Secretariat of State.
