    Panshanger Airport, Hertfordshire.

Lovely L/S of a policeman riding along through the countryside on a bike; he arrives at the airfield as another policeman gets into a boiler suit. Commentator tells us Hertfordshire Police Force has its own private flying club as we see some of the men looking at maps before takeoff.

Nice M/Ss of the plane, a Tiger Moth, taking off. Various shots of the plane in flight intercut with C/Us of people on the ground watching.

Note: on file is a small news cutting about the flying club.

"Panshangar" in text and tags should read Panshanger.

    Hi British Pathe.
The Police Flying Club film at Panshanger is excellent. Thanks for finding these for me, they have been well watched. This one though shows the original side of Panshanger Aerodrome (the North side) which was the original aerodrome before the South site was built in 1942/3 & then in the late 50's on the south site, the large T2 hanger was built where we see the next film of the Indoor Cycle Track.

I am trying to get Conservation Area status for Panshanger Aerodrome, with listed status as plan b. It is good to see the original buildings in the Police Flying Club film as now there are earth banks seperating the buildings.

    Best Wishes,

    Hi Steve.

Thanks for that, I did speak to another person who's dad was in the Police Flying Club at Panshanger. Also I have a website with more on Panshanger at: The conservation area has been turned down though I am still waiting to hear about my appeal. The Raf Mess on the North Side (where the bobby cycles through) has been put forward for protection as well as on the far side of the park a rare StarFish Control Centre from the decoy factory has been put forward for protection also. The aerodrome as it is now has 'Rare In-Situ' Hangers from WWII, and I will be looking in to this in 2014 to see if the aerodrome can still be saved. And also the long narrow hangar built in 1958 was for the SK1 Jet Plane, worth a look on the web.

    Kind Regards

The gentleman in the flying suit is Thomas Alfred WINSER born 11th January 1913. Thomas was a Chief Superintendent in the Hertfordshire Constabulary and was my Grandfather.

The Hertfordshire Police flying club is about to relaunch from Cranfield Airfield and has its opening day on the 30th September 2013.

The Tiger Moth aircraft featured is still flying today!
