A Beautifully made documentary in celebration of Louis Braille.
WS church tower as bell tolls, WS Notre Dame. Long procession of young children and old people, who are blind, walk through the streets of Paris in honour of the centenary of Louis Braille. In great pomp they arrive at the Pantheon, onlookers watch as the funeral car carries the body of Braille. Soldiers march either side and a band and dignitaries wait by the entrance steps. The coffin is carried inside and past the dignitaries to the inner sanctum.
WS of the village of Coupvray. MS sign, pan around village. Small ruined cottage, cu inscription "In this house on Jan 4 1809 was born Louis Braille. The inventor of the system of writing in raised dots for use by the blind. He opened the doors of knowledge to all those who cannot see." Two men greet in a doorway, another stands on a primitive agricultural device pulled by a horse. He drives it passed a shop front, inside the local Mayor is putting on his sash of authority. A small group leave the shop and walk to the grave yard where Braille's grave and sculpture lay. Various shots of the church and gravestone. A little girl places flowers on his grave stone.
The Duke of Edinburgh arrives to open the Braille Centenary Exhibition in London. He is greeted by officials and people who are blind. He makes a speech from a podium and talks about the importance of Braille's invention, CA's of hands reading Braille and a Braille map. The Duke visits a classroom of girls reading Braille, one girl guides his hand over the dots and reads to him from the book. An example of an earlier unsuccessful method shows pages of books with normal lettering that is raised. A variety of Braille printing machines are show starting with a hand punching each dot to automatic printers. Sighted people transcribe to Braille using various "typewriters", one man is seen transcribing the Radio Times.

Interior printing shop, and pages of Braille come automatically off the presses including the Radio Times. WS Library at the Institution for the Blind. A man is on a ladder pulling out Braille books from a top shelf, a woman checks another of the 20000 books in the library.
Ext garden, a woman is teaching a small smiling boy to read Braille at the Northwood Sunshine Home. A class of young children sit at desks on a lawn in the open. CU as a small boy puts pegs in holes of Braille format, a small girl reads from a Braille book.
Ext. residential school in the country, Chorley Wood Grammar, a young woman is riding a horse in front of the school she is assisted by teachers. MS as the girl opens her wristwatch and feels for the time, as two others stroke the horse. Interior classroom as girls study and work with Braille, reading, writing, illustrating geographical formations using a board with holes and connecting a series of pegs with cord. Pan from a hand feeling a raised Globe to a classroom. A girl has a raised map which she is feeling and then types on a small Braille machine. At a large round table girls are practising typing in preparation for commercial work. Another girl is being taught to play the piano using Braille music sheets. She plays a Schumann piece, through the window a small girl walks past with a rabbit. Outside a group of girls pet rabbits as the musician continues to play. CU of her face and hands as she plays. Outside a girl walks through long grass and up a small embankment.
