• Short Summary

Lovely promotional film for knitted garments - Dorothy Hyson is featured.

  • Description

Main title reads: "Paris Modes - a Dorland Fashion film." Two glamorous models pose in a studio setting dressed to look like a boudoir. Very nice Art Deco style furnishings. The girls wear flimsy underwear and shiny high heels. They are both smoking cigarettes. A "French maid" assists them with their toilette.

Man with a very clipped posh accent begins his commentary: "This short dissertation on the subject of ladies' wearing apparel should interest the gentleman in the audience. For after all, why shouldn't they appreciate the frills, and thrills, invented by Dame Fashion for the ladies?"

The scene changes as the stuffy male narrator is interrupted in his musings. A female narrator introduces the film actress Dorothy Hyson. C/U of Dorothy who wears a gorgeous sweater. She describes how many of her friends enjoy making their own clothes. Narrator tells us that Dorothy's jumper was knitted with Tricotton (?) not wool. C/U of knitting in progress. Narrator describes how knitting cotton is not at all "fuzzy"? like wool, the colours won't fade and garments won't shrink. Various knitted fashions are modelled. "Jumpers are the mode these days." states the narrator. The models are really gorgeous - as are the clothes in my opinion! A customer sits and makes notes as the girls model various fashions in a set representing a fashion house.

Male narrator interrupts again to conclude "with a little picture no artist could paint." C/U of a woman's stockinged legs as a kitten plays with a ball of wall. (The wool and kitten seem to be an excuse for a nice leg shot!) He adds that the knitting and crochet product we have seen is made by Clarke (sp?) and Co. of Paisley. End title states: "Endorsed by Schiaparelli" superimposed over a ball of wool. Wow!

Note: great glamour shots. Interesting early 1930s promotional film. Can label calls this film "Coats Cotton Film" although Coats is not mentioned on soundtrack or in titles.
