Great item: wounded British soldiers recovering in hospital, we see them playing games.
World War One: casualties.
Great item showing wounded British soldiers recovering at military hospital.
Shot of long low building with large open windows all along side; an "open-air Ward" at a hospital. Pan to several men sitting in windows or leaning against building outside. The idea is that the open air will cure "Tommy Atkins". Some of the men have bandages, one has had a leg amputated.
Interior. Playing checkers: C/U man lying in hospital bed with checkerboard on him while the other player reaches over from next bed, a third patient with a bandaged head watches the game.
Three Wounded soldiers stand in a row playing bowls outside. Man with broken left arm uses his right to toss the small heavy ball. One of the soldiers wears a jaunty little cap and his arm in a sling under long bathrobe. About 20 recuperating soldiers walk across lawn toward camera. Several gather around the ball that was rolled; one man points at spot on ground as others look. Line of 10 of the recovering soldiers standing in the garden, playing ring toss (quoits). One patient tosses ring toward camera; they walk forward; pointing and chatting etc.
Games; convalescent; location England
Modified WPA record.
