  • Description

Graphic reading 'Olympic ups and downs'. Wide shot of the Olympic rowing event at Henley. Spectators watching on from boat. Close up of spectators looking on from long canoes on the water. Men's double sculls action, as the British pair of Dickie Burnell and Bert Bushnell pull away with the Danish team of Ebbe Parsner and Aage Larsen hot on their heels. Brief shot of well-to-do looking lady fan watching through binoculars. High angle of the men's double sculls as Burnell and Bushnell cross the line for the gold medal, with Denmark taking the silver. Tight shot of Burnell and Bushnell looking exhausted in their boat, and being congratulated by the Danish pair. Brief of cheering crowd. Burnell and Bushnell looking tired but pleased in their boat. Tight shot of upper class spectators wearing their University caps. Shot of Australian rower Mervyn Wood looking tired in his boat after winning the single sculls gold medal, including nice close up as his hand is shaken. High shot of action from the men's eights final, as the US team, consisting of rowers from California University, pull into the lead on the near side as they head to the gold medal. Spectators watch on from the river bank.
Cycling action next, as Great Britain's Reg Harris starts his sprint final against Italy's Mario Ghella. Nice shots of them riding slowly, jockeying for position. A nervous lady spectator watches on. Back to the action, as Harris and Ghella sprint it out on the last lap. Nice long shot of the action as Ghella pulls away, only for Harris to pull back, before the Italian takes the gold at the line. Same lady spectator now jumps for joy. Ghella and Harris do a lap of honour together, Ghella waving. Brief of spectators looking on. Lovely shot of Reg Harris posing for camera with official.
Athletics action now, with action from the controversial men's 4 x 100m relay final. The race starts, and the runners take the first bend. Brief of watching spectators. USA's Barney Ewell hands over the baton to team mate Lorenzo Wright, who races on, unaware that he has been disqualified on the track for an infringement. USA's Mel Patton sprints on to take cross the line first, only to be told later his team had been disqualified. Unseen, the judges later review the decision from the newsreel footage, and deny Great Britain the gold medal by awarding it back to the USA. Shot of scoreboard showing Great Britain in the gold medal position. Men's marathon action, as Belgium's Etienne Gailly enters the stadium, looking rather shaky and fatigued, at the end of the race. Long close up of him running, before he is caught and passed by spritely looking Delfo Cabrera, of Argentina. Great Britain's Tom Richards enters the stadium. Wide shot of cheering spectators. Cabrera jogs down the home straight to take the gold, with nice low shot from behind the line as he crosses the line. He seems to be barged by a man in a suit on the track before being congratulated. Brief wide shot of spectators.
Men's 4 x 400m relay final action. High shot of the start of the race, then low shot as the athletes take the first bend, the camera focussing on USA's Roy Cochran and Jamaica's Les Laing as they sprint together. Nervous spectators look on. Wide shot as the runners run the back straight, before we see the first change over, and the next runners sprint away. The crowd cheer them on. Close up Jamaica's powerful looking Arthur Wint as he takes the corner and seems to be closing in on the lead, when he dramatically pulls up with a pulled leg muscle, and rolls around on the grass in agony and beats the ground. USA's Mal Whitfield crosses the line to take the gold. Wint is put onto a stretcher as his team mates gather round. A fan with shaved head watches on. Dramatic shot of Arthur Wint as he stands, refuses to get onto the stretcher, and then weeps on a team mate's shoulder. Pathe News 'The End' logo and music.
