A documentary about British traditions - street football, marbles, skittles, pancake races, etc.

  • Description

"A British Travel & Holidays Association Film" Commentary by John Glen. Produced by Associated British-Pathe Ltd.

Various British landscape shots - beautiful countryside and lovely classic houses - timber framed and thatched roofed houses. Idyllic British scenes. American voiceover talks of British traditions saying "Tradition after all can be fun."

High angle shot of Atherstone Near Birmingham where there is a game of street football every year . Hundreds of people scrabble for the ball as it is thrown around in the street. Various shots of the raucous game. Looks like fun.

C/U of a revolving metal hoop which pokes out of the ground. A ball is thrown towards it. It is a kind of "lawn billiards" game called Mell (sp?). Various shots of the game as it is being played in Hampstead - on a lawn behind the Freemason's Arms pub. Pall Mall is apparently named after the French name for the game.

C/U of a pub sign - The Greyhound at Tinsley Green, West Sussex. High angle shot of large crowd of people watching a marbles championship. Various shots of the players - all adults, most in flat caps.

Fun and games for some Coopers. An initiation ceremony is recorded by the cameras inside a Cooper's workshop. A sign on the wall reads: "Beer is Best". An apprentice Cooper is put inside a barrel. Men stand around the outside banging the edge of the barrel with mallets. The apprentice is showered with oak shavings - still hot from the fire. A pail of water is poured in, then a couple of mugs of beer. He is then rolled along through the warehouse. He is then pulled out of the barrel and given "the bumps." Continued.
