Old Contemptibles Military Parade, ca 1918.

  • Description

Old Contemptibles march - part 1.

Good footage of people at a military parade in England; in fact one of the better films of crowd at a parade & after from this period. Listed as Old Contemptibles' March; which refers to the British Army at the beginning of the war; which a German leader had called contemptible; the army jokingly took on the nickname Old Contemptibles. DS crowd massed along cleared street; others walking past in FG; Union Jack. Another view; looking up street; people all gathered on side; a few in street; waiting for parade. Shot looking over crowd as parade approaches; first people look around in various directions; then more people push toward front as a float comes.

Someone waving flag; as float passes some sparkling confetti is thrown into crowd. (It seems parade ends) Shots of crowd breaking up; scattering through park; British and Australian soldiers walking past; kids climbing on cannons; etc. Back to parade. Looking over crowd who are looking at parade; though some look up at camera; man holding kid up to see; etc. Floats with lots of Union Jacks drive up street; then group of men marching; in civilian suits. Seems to end; starts again at - some repeated. DS (higher) marchers with Old Contemptible banner. Float with sign The Allies; tableau - woman draped in USA flag; etc. Army trucks decorated. Costumed marching band. Back view Girl Guides marching. Several more shots of festival parade in progress.
