    I spent a year on the Gulf Tide when the rig was based in the Ecofisk field, Norwegian sector of the North Sea. This was around 1974. Flights were from Forus and then later on from Sola, Stavenger. Helicopters used were S61N's and crewed by Norwegians who were very professional and cautious, ie long start ups, thorough safety briefing and hovering for sometime before leaving Forus to fly over the sea. A Jet ranger was also used from the Gulf Tide to the other platforms. Weather could be flat calm or very unpleasant and dangerous with the risk of slipping or falling off the rig or platform and sadly this happened to someone when I was out there. You had to be careful when moving around. Conditions on the Gulf Tide were quite good but hot when flaring off took place. You had to be careful on the heli deck and tail rotors are an added hazard. It is easy to make one mistake and get hurt so potential risks must be considered at all times.The North Sea can be nasty and unforgiving at times.
