  • Short Summary

Short film showing two Nuffield employees (?) boarding a large ship called the "Sarpendon".

  • Description

    Unedited material.

Side of a large ship with the name "Sarpendon". Panning shot to show dockside. Two men walk along a rainy quay side then across a gangplank to the ship. Other people walk on board. C/U of two men (not recognised by this cataloguer) talking and laughing. Presumably two employees of Nuffield. Out of focus shot of prow of ship.

Note: this is unedited material, presumably part of an advertising film for Nuffield Organisation. One of the men may be Lord Nuffield.

References to "Sarpendon" in text and tags need altering, for the ship is in fact the SS Sarpedon, a cargo liner of the Blue Funnel line.

"C/U of two men (not recognised by this cataloguer)" - the older man is Lord Nuffield, enabling the removal of the final comment in the body text.

The younger man is Sidney Horniblow, the sales promotion executive of the Nuffield organisation.

The two men were on their way to Australia. The date of filming is January or February 19146, enabling a reduction of the clip's current date range of 1940-49.

A short newspaper article of the era reporting Lord Nuffield's visit is attached....
