• Short Summary

Novelist Dennis Wheatley and his hobby of brick laying at his home in Lymington, Hampshire.

  • Description

M/S of exterior of novelist Dennis Wheatley's country house in Lymington, Hampshire, as a man walks past with a wheelbarrow. M/S as Dennis, in overalls, walks through an iron gate in a brick wall and looks up to admire the archway as we pan up to see it. M/S of a ripple-shaped wall ('turret formation' - it says in the shot list).

M/S of Dennis laying bricks at a wall outside the house; C/U as he checks the wall with a spirit level; commentator talks of Dennis' writing achievements then tells us "this is his main hobby, and the walls of all shapes and sizes in his 3 acre garden testify to his skill and experience". M/Ss of a white statue with a brick turret behind, then various features of the walls: buttresses and arches.

C/U of Dennis chipping away at the base of an old brick, then rubbing it against another to smooth it off. Commentator says Dennis gets great artistic pleasure from his hobby and has just written a book on it to spread the cult to the uninitiated. C/U of Dennis as he works; he looks very contented!

C/U of first editions of Dennis' books in a bookcase, panning right and tilting down to show more. M/S of Dennis writing at his desk in his library; he looks quite different in posh clothes! C/U as we see he is writing in pencil and rubs out a mistake. M/S of a group of five swords displayed on the wall; tilt down to show a ceramic figure of Hoi-Toi, the Chinese god of happiness, sitting on a wooden chest. C/Us of ceramic models on Dennis' desk, one of a man and woman in 18th Century costume, the other of Europa and the Bull (Europa has no head); a Maori axe-head is seen behind it.

C/U of a tapestry covered chair stitched by Mrs Wheatley. M/S of Dennis and Mrs Wheatley sitting on a sofa by the fire; she sews as he takes a packet of stamps from his album, empties them onto a small round table (that Dennis decorated with stamps) and examines them under a magnifying glass. C/U of stamps under glass on the table as Dennis holds the magnifier over them. C/U of Mrs Wheatley sewing; M/S of the couple busy at their hobbies.

    "Hoi-Toi" should read Hotei.
