• Short Summary

Nicholas Medvedeff and his Orchestra play traditional Russian tunes.

  • Description

Titles read: "PIC MUSICAL - NICHOLAS MEDVEDEFF AND HIS ORCHESTRA".

    London, probably Pathe Studio.

Various shots of Nicholas Medvedeff and his Orchestra playing traditional Russian music. The four men and two women are all dressed in traditional costume and, except for one woman they all play Russian guitars (triangular-shaped). One man plays an enormous triangle guitar. They sit and stand on some large white steps that run the length of the studio.

As they play another girl in traditional dress enters and does a dance to the music, ending in the splits. Then the non-guitar playing woman stands before a microphone and sings a song. It ends with the men laughing at her, in time to the music. The woman sits down with a disgruntled look on her face.

Nikolai Medvedeff's orchestra performed until the mid-1960s, when he retired.
His name has been Anglicised on the film, but he was known to his friends as "Kolya", a diminutive of Nikolai.

Having read the description, they are not "guitars" but balalaikas, of differing sizes. The man far right of screen is playing a Domra, which has a more strident tone and is used for melody . Kolya Medvedeff is seated at the back, in the light-coloured shirt.
