  • Short Summary

The RAF try out a new mechanical device to speed the launch of planes.

  • Description

Full title reads: "Farnborough. New type Catapult - of giant power for projecting planes from confined spaces, successfully tried out."

    Farnborough, Kent.

An RAF (Royal Air Force) biplane is pushed up a ramp and attached to a mechanical catapult device.

A special device built onto a car turns the propellor and then reverses away. Pan a long the plane and ramp to show wires and pistons behind which will aid the launch.

Men are shown winding on a pulley to put tension into the system. The plane is slowly wound back into the catapult device. Once the device is fully wound the pilot raises his hand and the catapult is fired. The plane shoots forward but skids along the ground and doesn't take off.

N.B. The title might say it was a successful test but it didn't look all that great to me. MD
