• Short Summary

Excellent crosstalk - Ronald Frankau and Tommy Handley as Murgatroyd and Winterbottom.

  • Description

Mr Murgatroyd and Mr Winterbottom. Part of the FROM AD TO BBC issue.

Probably filmed in the Pathe Studio, London.

The wonderful comedian Tommy Handley (Mr Winterbottom) is seen sitting on a bench in a park (studio set), wearing a flat cap, false moustache, white gloves and smoking a cigar. Ronald Frankau (Mr Murgatroyd), also in false moustache plus bowler hat and fur mittens, enters and sits beside him. The pair engage in some quick-fire crosstalk, with the puns and double-entendres flying thick and fast - very funny.

They discuss various topics, including baths and washing ("Do you find it difficult to wash the small part between the shoulder blades?" "Soapless! I've given up the attempt" "Really? I've thrown up the sponge too" "Well, I've never tried that way"), furniture, cricket, the countryside, trees ("Do you like chestnuts?" "I'm mad about this act!"), pubs and alcohol, world affairs and farmers. They do a little shuffle then make their exits, both saying to the camera "Dreadful fellow!".

This is great for showing the kind of fast wordplay that developed into Handley's famous wartime radio show 'ITMA' (It's That Man Again).

Note: Routine contains the offensive exchange: "Have you ever done any blackberrying?" "I once attended a nigger's funeral".
