• Short Summary

Children have moths attached to their clothes - a family of moth fanciers.

  • Description

    Harlow, Essex.

M/S of a little girl cutting leaves off a tree. She puts the leaves inside a plastic container - food for caterpillars. Various shots of different kinds of caterpillars - good C/Us. M/S of a woman, possibly the girl's mother taking the lid off the container and taking out a moth. She places it on the hand of a young boy who stands beside her. C/U of the moth on his jumper. The little girl comes over and has lots of moths put onto her dress. She doesn't look that happy about it although she is smiling. Could be some kind of nasty child torture - I wouldn't fancy it.

"The fact is that the whole happy Harlow-housed Heslop family are moth fanciers." states the narrator who makes lots of jokes about moths throughout the commentary.

I and my children(at the time) were the people in the film. Now, 50 years later, i have just
reared a batch of the privet hawk caterpillars of the moths adorning my daughter's dress. They are quite striking - three and a half inches long and half an inch thick. They were referred to in the film as bird sized beauties from Borneo !! In fact they are fairly common in the south of England - our largest hawk moth. I wonder where the commentator got his information from ?
