In a field cut down to eight by the coughing epidemic, odds-on favourite Meld wins St Leger.

They start to move towards the tape but E Mercer gets his head caught in the tapes and is dismounted. He is riding Lovely Vatel. Mercer rises from ground and horses start to move back for a restart. Pan, No 5, Daemon in the lead followed by No 13, Miss Rigton, followed by Beau Prince and Marwari. CU. Pan, Daemon still in the lead followed by Miss Rigton with Beau Prince close behind. LV. Horses rounding bend to come up the straight, they pass the four furlong post still in the same order. Meld on the outside starts to close up behind Beau Prince. Meld still closing up, is now just behind Miss Rigton. Meld is running neck and neck with Daemon and Miss Rigton. Lester Piggott on Nucleus is close behind, pan as horses race up the straight with Piggott still closing up. GV. Horses race towards the finish, about a furlong from the winning post. Meld took up the running to a great burst of speed, but Lester Piggott on Nucleus suddenly began an electrifying burst. He rapidly closed up on Meld and tried to pass between her and the rails. Meld seemed to swerve and Piggott switched Nucleus to the outside. Meld passes post with Nucleus close behind. SCU. People watching. GTV. Lady Zia Wernher, Meld's owner, leading her to the winning enclosure. Jockey Harry Carr dismounts. Objection overruled.
