  • Description

    Manchester's Aeroplane Gift To India.

Shot of crowd surrounding aeroplane. CU lady in fur coat who's doing the christening has just whacked the bottle; assisted by an RAF airman; and champagne is pouring out on the propeller. Pan over to 2 RAF guys by front of plane; and man in bowler with Indian colonial flag; woman stands by him.

CU an Indian airman in a turban sitting on the aeroplane; with his legs in the pilot seat. CU Englishman in top hat and 2 Indian men in turbans (one an old man in a big white turban; with a full beard - looks like a Maharajah or some VIP) pose in front of plane. A fun shot; between posing for pics - the elderly Indian is waving an Indian flag around; next to him stands an English woman in a hat with lots of feathers; various other people with flags; strings of pennants flying; etc. Festive. A few more shots like this.

Quick shot of some people sitting in stands under roof; watching the event. Back to the festive bit. Another shot of the Indian flyer seated on the plane. Pan along line of all the people involved in this little ceremony. Young bearded & turbaned Indian turning propeller. Ends with the start of the christening part with the lady wielding the little hammer.

    Commonwealth; colonialism; ceremonies.

    Amendment July 2015:
Film features Sikh fighter pilot Lt Hardit Singh Malik, the first Indian pilot to serve in the Royal Flying Corps during WW1.
