One of these teams is the Sterling Ladies FC of Dagenham - “The Invincibles”. They were arguably the most successful women’s football team of the First World War. They are playing in their distinctive white and dark ‘quarter’ shirts and shorts. They played two seasons 1917-18 and 1918-19. A photo of the team appeared in the New York Herald in 1918 with the caption: ‘The unbeaten women champions of Great Britain’. They finished their two seasons with a record of 34 wins + 2 draws with 201 goals for and 14 against. Several opposition teams played in similar dark tunics.
