Children and teenagers play table tennis at Butlin's Holiday Camp in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.
Butlin's Holiday Camp, Bognor Regis, West Sussex.
Various M/Ss and C/Us of eight teenagers warming up for a table tennis match; they are all hitting balls across a ping-pong table in pairs at the same time. Commentator says that training has been "given at a Bognor holiday camp [Butlins], to weekly winners of a coaching scheme, sponsored by a national newspaper".
The teenagers all take their seats in the audience as four younger boys play a game of doubles, each one coming in to take alternate shots. C/U of a young girl in the audience watching; C/U of the coaches, Johnny Leach and Diane Rowe watching at a table and making notes.
More shots of the game, intercut with children watching in the audience clutching their table tennis bats, anxious for their turns. Various shots of 17-year-old Cynthia Blackshaw who has the opportunity of playing a champion when she plays against Diane Rowe. They play a fast game; when Cynthia wins a point Diane rushes over to shake her hand and congratulate her as the audience applauds.
Trivia point: I went to this holiday camp in 1984 and played table tennis in this hall - they still had the same lino on the floor 24 years later!
Note: print is quite scratched. The four boys playing doubles are Derek Corbett and Chester Barnes playing against Willie Gibbs and Peter Williams. For search purposes: Butlins. Cuts exist - see separate record.
