• Short Summary

Romany food and entertainment at a Gypsy party at London's Mount Royal Hotel.

  • Description

M/S of two men and a woman sitting around a camp fire; the woman stirs a cooking pot hanging over the fire; they are all dressed in gypsy costume. A young girl comes in and sits by the fire and the men talk and gesticulate. The woman passes a ladle of soup for one of the men to taste; he has a pointy moustache, a golden earring and a woven scarf around his head; he waggles his head around to say the soup is OK (I think!). C/Us of the soup cauldron as the woman stirs; the young girl laughing.

C/U of a hand-written sign saying 'Madame Vera - Fortunes'. M/S as a lady and man in evening clothes enter Madame Vera's tent; Madame Vera waits in headscarf and gypsy clothes before her crystal ball. The man walks on as the lady sits opposite Madame Vera and giggles as her fortune is told; good news presumably. Commentator tells us the Gypsies were at London's Mount Royal Hotel for a party featuring the gypsy. M/S of a hanging flower basket; panning left to show a sign above a tent entrance reading 'Tinker's Haven'. Inside we see a Romany man from Scotland serving haggis for a woman; M/S of people eating haggis, the group includes an Indian woman in a sari.

M/S of a Romany couple standing in the centre of a hexagon of 'Roll a Penny' boards; some people in normal dress have a go; C/U of one of the boards as the pennies are rolled and then picked up by the Romanies. C/U of a sign above a tent reading 'The Magyars Retreat'; inside we see a man in gypsy costume holding a sword of shish kebabs which he roasts by holding a flaming sword beneath it. Posh people are served and tuck in. A crowd is gathered around a joint of beef on a spit over a fire. A Romany man carves and puts the meat on a plate held by another man.

M/S of Spanish Romanies playing accordions and castanets while a girl in a red and white spotted dress dances and swishes her frilly skirts; M/S of her feet stamping; C/U of a Romany man in a silky shirt and headscarf clapping. The dancing girl twirls and makes a gesture as if to say she can't do any more.
