Panning shot of wrecked cloisters that had been used as mortar positions. Various shots of soldiers clambering about ruins, they find abandoned German equipment. A few ornate paintings remain inside the monastery.

Various shots of town square. Italian refugees mill around with their belongings, some get on board Allied Forces trucks. The refugees look starved and exhausted. An American soldier translates one of the refugees' stories for a British officer (natural sound). The refugee explains how he was forced to pay exorbitant prices for small crust of bread. Various shots of another refugee family that have been "feeding on grass and roots" for weeks. They look extremely malnourished and are eating food supplied by army. Amongst them are small children and an elderly woman.
