A town criers' competition held in Lyme Regis in Dorset. Lots of bells and loud voices.

  • Description

Full title reads: "Lyme Regis. 'Human Loud Speakers'. W B Anglis of Marlborough judged 'the big noise' from 12 other competitors winning Town Criers Championship for fourth time."

    Lyme Regis, Dorset.

Town crier in top hat rings his bell and starts his cry of 'Oh yeaz'. A small crowd is gathered around the outdoor podium.

Shots of another town crier in hat and robes (I think he is also featured in the same contest in 1932 - 32/67).

    Another crier in tricorn hat.

Good CU of crier in top hat calling out. CU of another crier. CU of town crier.

MS of town crier. CU town crier shouts 'God Save the King' and rings his bell.

The Mayor of Lyme Regis presents the prize to W B Anglis.

N.B. Town Criers used to make proclamations in towns and villages around the country - their position later became mainly ceremonial.
