• Short Summary

Industrial area and terraced housing - location unknown.

  • Description

Location unknown - probably a Northern town in England.

Various shots of an industrial area - moving shots probably taken from a car. Industrial chimneys, smoking stacks, factories, etc.

Panning shots of terraced housing. Puddles in the street, looks like quite a run down area. Washing hanging out in a yard. Elderly man in flat cap walks along with a black dog on a lead. Various shots of terraces. Elderly man walks along carrying something wrapped in paper - fish and chips perhaps? Children walk along a street away from the camera. Panning shot of rooftops - it is a very smoky, smoggy, sky.

Various shots of "For Sale" signs beside more modern housing. This is probably a newish housing estate.

The clip is currently dated 1972, however an upside-down clapperboard at 08:27 tells us that date of filming is 10 February 1973.

The clapperboard also tells us that filming is for the Thames Television current affairs programme "This Week".

A close-up of a "For Sale" sign, (for Michael A Wrest Estate Agents), at 08:37 suggests that the location for this clip is the area of Barnsley.

The opening shot is of Tinsley Viaduct on the M1 east of Sheffield. The cooling towers of the former Blackburn Meadows power station were demolished in 2008 but were a well known landmark owing to their proximity to the motorway.
