• Short Summary

Great shots of leisure activities, giving ideas for holidays at home this summer.

  • Description

Titles read: "HOLIDAYS AT HOME THIS YEAR".

    Various locations in Great Britain.

Panning shot across a railway depot yard full of tanks and military equipment. Commentator says "It is vital that all transport is left free for the war effort, so we really must spend our holidays at home".

Nice shots of people having fun at outdoor swimming pools and children paddling in a lake (or the sea?). In Hyde Park, London, we see people asleep in deck chairs (including a woman with a fox fur, handbag and hat) while others laze on the grass in their swimsuits. On the Serpentine Lake people bump into each other in rowing boats (one girl looks rather shaken by this!).

We then see a montage of brief shots, giving suggestions for holidays at home. People play tennis on outdoor courts. C/U of a record spinning round on a gramophone player, then M/S of couples dancing together in a park. People sit around a park bandstand, listening to the band playing. Huge queues of people outside a city cinema. Middle-aged man fishing beside a river; a woman stands beside him. Women sit knitting in a garden while a man squirts something over the bushes. More shots of people gardening. A man stops for a swig of "ginger pop". People cycling and hiking, playing golf, L/S of cricket match. People take tea at tables on a lawn or in a park.

Note: great shots for illustrating leisure activities of the 1940s.
