Lovely footage of people strolling and eating in London parks during wartime - very evocative.
Unissued / unused footage - dates and locations may be unclear or unknown.
'Holidays At Home' in wartime London - probably dates from 1942 (see newsreel 42/51 - Holidays At Home This Year).
Crowds sitting in deckchairs around bandstand in a London park - probably Hyde Park. Looks a bit chilly - that's the British summer for you! Nice shot of women in summer dresses sitting on the grass - probably having or just had a picnic. Shots of people in suits and coats walking through the park (good glimpse of 1940s coat and hat fashions). Men fishing at Serpentine, all look a bit cold, with hats and coats on and a few umbrellas seen in background. M/S of man in flat cap crouched on side of lake with fishing rod while it rains lightly.
Good footage of people at outdoor tables of park restaurant or cafe. Some men in uniform among them. Most people look at the camera as we pan round. Nice shot of three women and a man sitting at a table and eating - the women all look at the camera, giggling, then get the man, who has his back to us, to turn around and look, which he does while chewing his food. Nice little scene - quite charming, somehow!
People feed Canada geese at side of Serpentine. Rather misty L/S of rowing boats on Serpentine. More footage of people at cafe tables - seems to be raining. Waiter walks amongst them. Several shots of a game of bowls in progress. Nice general views of people walking through park and sitting on benches. Busy day - weekend? Lots of people out for a stroll. Line of people sitting 'cheek by jowl' on benches. People seated around bandstand.
Cataloguer's note: there is some really lovely candid footage of wartime Londoners here - very evocative of the era and strangely comforting (to someone who wasn't around then!). See also UN 2476 D.
