  • Description

    HMHS Britannic - 1914.

    Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Various shots of the White Star passenger liner HMHS Britannic under construction in the Harland & Wolff shipyard. Shots of funnel being lowered onto deck. Shots out of order.

Opens w/ shot of foggy harbour; back of Britannic at left fg; smoke coming from boat in bg. CU propellor (not moving) w/ water rushing underneath. CU another propellor but w/ sharp points - inside cut-out arch; water in bg. Side view of ship; then slow pan. Closer shot of ships large funnels; w/ smoke coming from 1. Series of other shots at that distance; like a divided pan. Side view end of ship. Same; closer.

Shot of funnel to be put on ship in fg held up w/ cable & pulley; part of ship in bg. 1 End of funnel lifted up. Slowly keeps rising. Back down again; but a man on top; who looks tiny from here. He starts to climb down ladder.

Worker (very dark; almost in silhouette) in between 2 big dark things that cover nearly whole screen - just small strip of light in between. Last shot - crane or some sort of machinery - with the huge cylinder funnel hanging from it in bg.

Technology. The Britannic was sister ship to the Titanic; built in 1914; she was outfitted as a hospital ship in 1915; and blown up by a mine in 1916.
