• Short Summary

Fabulous documentary showing how Heinz make their 57 varieties.

  • Description

Heinz promotional film. Lovely stuff - great colour, great music, nicely shot.

Footage of Italian plum tomatoes being picked intercut with shots of the Heinz canning factory. Beans are harvested in Michigan, United States of America. Empty cans are seen on a conveyor belt. They are filled with beans. Over footage of man using knife to crack a coconut and workers crushing spices in the Caribbean Islands. More good footage of work in the Heinz factory. Silver skin onions from Holland are graded for size on a production line (all women workers on the onions!). Onions are weighed then tipped into large barrels. 57 varieties of cargo are sent from around the world to the Heinz food processing plant in Kitt Green, Lancashire. Footage of the pickled onions being pickled. Cut to short shot of Iraq where the dates come from. C/U of tins of Date Sponge Pudding being packed into a box.

Great shots of two women in a supermarket taking cans of Heinz soup off the shelf. A wall of red Heinz cans. C/U of a basket with lots of Heinz products being loaded in including Salad Cream and Tomato Ketchup. Woman leaves supermarket looking very pleased with herself. Premier Supermarket - location unknown. More footage inside the Heinz factory - cans on conveyor belt, boxes of Cream of Tomato Soup on conveyor belt.

Map of the world is used to show that the raw materials for Heinz products come from all around the world. Nice diagram. Countries which export to Heinz include Africa, China, Spain, North America, India, Italy, United States of America, Cuba, Canada, France, Egypt, etc. Narrator tells us that Heinz don't go overseas for material if they can buy it in the United Kingdom. Another nice map showing where different products are sourced.

Inside Heinz factory we see huge crates of Spanish onions and sacks of carrots. Barrels of Sherry, mushrooms, celery, ox tails and cheeses by the score... "What makes a wonderful soup?" asks the narrator. He will tell us using chicken soup as an example. See part two.
