  • Short Summary

Guardsmen and French officers inspecting guns.

  • Description

Guardsmen with French officers inspecting (captured?) guns.

Location of events unknown / unclear.

British Guardsmen wearing busbies and musical instruments; approach en masse. MS Guards still holding instruments with French officers; inspecting a lot of guns in a pile on the ground. MS a few of them standing around.

Then pan across large hall; huge room; where the Guards are standing in rows; playing music; while French soldiers watch.

Shot of the seating section: an officer and several dignified looking men in suits sit in nice chairs; included is a man who looks a lot like French President Raymond Poincare; at their right in background are men in wheelchairs; with nurses standing.

Maybe it's a hospital. The man who may be Poincare steps forward to shake hands with Guardsman; both the Guard and a British Army officer salute him.

    The item is repeated.

GUARDSMEN WITH FRENCH OFFICERS 1914-1918. This footage records the visit of the five Foot Guards' bands to Paris in 1917. The bands (Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh) visited between May 22nd and May 29th, and were invited by the French Government. The massed bands played various concerts, at the Trocadero, the Garde Republicaine Barracks, the Citroen munitions factory, the Place Vendome and the Tuileries, in addition to various hospitals in the capital. The 'Guardsman' shaking hands is Major John Mackenzie-Rogan (1856-1932), Director of Music, Coldstream Guards and Senior Director of Music of the Brigade of Guards.
