  1. John Kempsell says

Gentleman at the end of the newsreel is my grandfather William Kempsell
who owned the business Kempsell's Advertising Service. He was Glasgow's go-to man in the 1930s and 40s for cinema advertising. He was also one of the cinema promoters who persuaded the city council to allow cinemas to open on Sundays.
The council eventually agreed, so long as all the door money went to charitable causes. By 1944, the Sunday film screenings had raised over £77,000 for local causes.
Mr Kempsell, who was the chairman of the Cinema Trade Benevolent Fund, is near the end of this Pathe newsreel of the 1947 Glasgow Cinema Ball, held in the rooftop ballroom of Green’s Playhouse (later the Apollo).
